The Importance Of The Family Experience

July 27, 2026

When families choose a school, they are often focused on finding the best academic fit for their child. They consider curriculum, teachers, opportunities, and outcomes. While those factors are undeniably important, another aspect profoundly shapes a child's educational journey: belonging. At Mounds Park Academy, belonging extends far beyond our students. It includes parents, siblings, grandparents, and caregivers, creating a community where every family feels seen, valued, and connected. It is this sense of belonging that strengthens student confidence, enriches learning, and creates a school community where everyone thrives.

Why Does Belonging Matter For Private School Families?

Research from the American Psychological Association consistently shows that students who feel connected to their school are more engaged, more resilient, and better equipped to succeed academically and socially. In the Journal of Educational Psychology, it cites, "Students who feel connected to their school are more likely to have better academic achievement, including higher grades and test scores, have better school attendance, and stay in school longer." But a student's sense of belonging often begins with the adults in their lives. When parents feel welcomed into a school community, they become active partners in their child's education. They build relationships, participate in traditions, support one another through life's milestones, and reinforce the values that students experience each day at school. The Consortium on Chicago School Research outlines in The Essential Supports that "Parent-Community Ties directly relates to whether schools are a welcoming place for parents and whether there are strong connections between them. Elementary schools with strong parental involvement were ten times more likely to improve in math and four times more likely to improve in reading than schools weak in this measure." School becomes more than a place children attend; it becomes a community that families consider a second home.

How Does Mounds Park Academy Build a Culture of Belonging?

At MPA, belonging is intentionally woven into the school experience. Families are invited to be present from the very beginning, whether through classroom volunteering, attending performances and athletic events, participating in community celebrations, joining Parent Association activities, or simply sharing conversations during school events. Parents are not observers; they are valued members of the community and are always welcome in the halls and classrooms.

What Does Belonging Look Like For MPA Families?

For Kristen, whose three children attend Lower School at MPA, this unexpected sense of community has become one of the most meaningful parts of her family's experience.

"When we chose MPA for our children, we knew the opportunities it would present to them," she explains. "As we spent time at the school, we were delighted to realize that there was an entire community and friendship between the parents that we never expected."

Her experience reflects what many families discover after joining MPA. While strong academics may initially bring families through the doors, relationships are at the center of why they stay. The friendships formed among parents become an extension of the supportive environment their children experience every day.

How Does Mounds Park Academy Build Family Connections Throughout The School Year?

That sense of connection is cultivated intentionally throughout the year. Families gather for traditions that celebrate learning, creativity, athletics, service, and cultural appreciation. Parents are welcomed into classrooms, invited to volunteer, encouraged to attend performances and exhibitions, and included in conversations about their children's growth. These opportunities create meaningful touchpoints that strengthen relationships between families, faculty, and one another.

Kristen describes how those experiences have helped her family feel deeply connected.

"It is incredible to know the children and parents by name, to be invited inside the school and the classroom at every opportunity, and to know that as the kids grow into the pre-teen stage of their lives, there will be an entire safety net already put into place to foster them through that journey, and onwards into adulthood."

What Support Network Do Families Find At Mounds Park Academy?

This "safety net" is one of the defining characteristics of the MPA community. Faculty members know students well. Parents all know one another. Older students mentor the younger students. Families celebrate successes together and offer support when it is needed. It is these relationships that create an environment where children feel safe taking risks, asking questions, trying new experiences, and developing their confidence.

Kristen has seen this firsthand as her children have grown alongside their classmates.

"It has been wonderful to watch other children grow with ours," she shares. "We know each child's personal story, and have the ability to support other parents, and other parents to support us as we all experience life together. This is the whole child experience. It is where school and home converge as a community."

Her words beautifully capture what makes belonging so powerful. Education is not simply about academic achievement. It is about nurturing the whole child through relationships, shared experiences, and caring adults who work together to help each student grow into their best selves.

How Do Families Experience Belonging Every Day?

At MPA, belonging is not limited to a single event or program. It is reflected in the everyday interactions that make families feel known. It is found in the personal greetings at morning drop-off, in conversations between parents at events and concerts, in partnerships between teachers and caregivers, in celebrations of milestones, and in traditions that bring the community together year after year. These moments build trust, strengthen relationships, and create lasting memories that extend well beyond graduation.

Belonging is more than feeling welcomed. Belonging is feeling known, valued, and supported. It is recognizing that each family contributes something meaningful to the life of the school and that every relationship strengthens the community as a whole. When families belong, students flourish. When relationships are nurtured, confidence grows. And when school and home come together, education becomes something far greater than what happens inside a classroom. It becomes a community where every child and every family has the opportunity to thrive.
